After a recent miniature main in Louisiana. I have been
asked by several of my friends for the breeding of my miniature butcher
gamefowl. which I will endeavor to do, for posterity or whatever
These birds are made up from the Red Richardson large
Butcher fowl that were bred & shown by Oscar Akins & Harold Brown.
Their record is testified in all the game journels.
The miniature Butchers that I breed & raise started as
a cross with the miniature Beaton Hatch blood (Blueface-McLean) that I originated
back in late 50’s of which I participated in many pit bantam mains &
derbies all over the Southern States. These little Hatch cocks were the gamest
pit bantam fowl I ever saw or met anywhere, in my years showing them.
Later on I was fortunate enough to obtain through friendship
a hen from my good friend Bill Warner. He had crossed a small proven Beaton
Hatch cock (of my blood) to a relatively small (pure as driven snow) Red Richardson
Butcher hen from (Mr. Orey-Houston, Tx), Bill later gave a hen from this
butcher cross to me. I then took a proven ‘blinker Beaton cock over this
butcher cross hen and came up with fowl that were even better than the Beaton
Hatch fowl. Smarter, quicker & very accurate.
Over the years I’ve added whitehackle & Albany blood
with a dash of very good Spanish (of which all Butcher blood carries). I HAVE
ALWAYS BRED BACK TO THE BUTCHER SIDE OF THIS CROSS. (blackbreasted red, pearl
& yellow legs, straight combs with some white in wings & tails) some
come Black brass back with pearl or yellow legs, as many of Oscar’s &
Harold’s did. Dark legs may showup from the Hatch side of the original cross. Weights
for male birds are from (2:08 Ibs to 4 Ibs) These are miniature gamefowl, not
old English game banties and should not be considered as anything less.
In over fifty years of raising & meeting small
gamecocks from all over the South I’ve seen no small birds that were
consistently better than these little Butchers. Wherever I showed them, I
rarely lost with them, until I started meeting the same blood. No swagger, that’s
just the way It is....
...
Sincerely yours in the sport Joseph ‘Boot’ Hill,
